In this section, we focus on teaching the students the essential defensive strategies in Korfball. Effective defense is crucial to prevent the opposing team from scoring and to regain possession of the ball. Here, we will cover positioning, marking, and intercepting passes.

Positioning

Begin by explaining the importance of maintaining proper defensive positioning. Students should always position themselves between their opponent and the korf (basket). This positioning helps to block the opponent's path to the korf and makes it more difficult for them to receive passes or take shots.

Marking

Next, introduce the concept of marking. Each student should be responsible for closely guarding an opponent. Emphasize the need to stay aware of their opponent's movements and to maintain close proximity without committing fouls. Demonstrate how to move laterally and use quick footwork to keep up with the opponent.

Intercepting Passes

Discuss the technique of intercepting passes. Encourage students to anticipate the direction of passes and to use their peripheral vision to read the game. Show them how to extend their arms and move quickly to cut off passing lanes, thereby increasing their chances of intercepting the ball.

Drills

Set up drills that allow students to practice these defensive strategies in a controlled environment. For example, pair up students and have them take turns playing offense and defense. The defender should focus on maintaining proper positioning, marking their opponent, and attempting to intercept passes.

Rotate pairs every few minutes to ensure that students have the opportunity to defend against different opponents. Provide feedback and corrections as needed to help students improve their defensive skills.
